| Michael Magliari to Speak about the Farmers’ Alliance | |
| All Day (SLOHS - Time TBA) | |
| Professor Michael Magliari, whose 1992 doctoral dissertation about the Farmers’ Alliance in San Luis Obispo was the inspiration for much of our new Farmers’ Alliance exhibit, will be at the County Museum on June 7 to address us. Now on the faculty at Chico State, he is a lifelong Californian who spent much of his boyhood at South Lake Tahoe. He earned all three of his degrees in history at UC Davis. Among his research interests are agricultural, political and economic history, and all three of these coincide in the Farmers’ Alliance movement. He found that there was little historical literature about West Coast Populism, even though it was strong here. Wanting to do a case study of a single county, he studied 1892 and 1894 election returns to find where Populism had made its strongest showing and settled on San Luis Obispo, home of colorful Populist gubernatorial candidate J. V. Webster. “It’s a nice place to visit,” he said. “And you have terrific resources and places to work.” He did some of his research at our slochs archives, and praises our volunteers, staff and facilities. | ----- Monday, June 09, 2008 ----- |

| Docents & Volunteers Margaret Ann Maricle to speak about James Cass | |
| 10:00 AM-12:00 PM | |
| Margaret Ann Maricle to Speak about Captain James Cass and the Founding of Cayucos Margaret Ann Maricle will talk about the subject of her book, The Cass House and Cayucos, at our Docents and Volunteers meeting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10, at our County Museum. Her book describes the arrival of Captain Cass and his family in the Cayucos area in 1867, his financial success in linking agriculture and transportation there, and the town that grew around his pier, warehouse, and residence, all of which still stand after more than 100 years. Her book captures the personality and character of Captain Cass through over 75 photographs and offers a walking tour of historical Cayucos and a driving tour of the vicinity. Margaret Ann Maricle is a writer and former college instructor whose work features travel, antiques, poetry, spirituality, and local interests. Her articles have appeared in SLO County Journal, Ohio Antique Review, and Making a Difference: Personal Essays by Today’s College Teachers. Ms. Maricle earned a B.A. in English at the University of Tennessee and an M.A. in Education at Cal Poly. At our Annual Meeting Ms. Maricle was a joint recipient of a Preservation Award, along with Nancy and Gary Bagnall, who purchased the Cass House and restored it as an historic inn and restaurant with the help of Ms. Maricle’s research. | |
